I saw in the TV a sad news this morning that a M/V Princess of the Stars of Sulpicio Lines which was carrying 700 plus passengers sunk last night off Sibuyan Island / San Fernando, Romblon. The ship was said to have sent out a distress signal after it was stranded due to engine trouble and lost power. There was said to be a big hole in the center of the ship. Rescue had not been easy and one was called off because of the bad weather brought about by Typhoon Frank (international codename Fengshen) causing big waves, strong winds and heavy rain. Efforts to rescue possible survivors are put on hold and will resume until the weather would allow them. The ferry’s manifest had a record of 702 passengers on board which includes about 50 children and 100 crew as per Coast Guard. There were dead bodies found but there are et to be survivors. This is really sad and a horrible news especially for the families of those passengers on board that ship that sank. We pray for them and their families. We are hopeful that there are still survivors to be rescued out there.

My mom and my sister were on-board of the M/V Princess of the Orient on the night of September 18, 1998. It is apparently ASTONISHING for Sulpicio Lines making a record of having 4 worst disasters in the history.

I would like to ask some clarification, aside from other factors to earn money (overloading and etc.), does a shipping company get Millions/Billions from an Insurance having this kind of incident (making the ship sink, INTENTIONALLY?)

The tragedy in 1998 (M/V Pricess of the Orient) was claimed to be caused by typhoon (Signal #1 NCR)… 2008, M/V Princess of the Stars sank due to typhoon Frank (Signal #1-3 for the areas of central luzon, ncr, and southern luzon).

why take the risk of letting a ship travel despite of the typhoon? The people are aware that Romblon area has a strong and big waves even in the absence of typhoon…
