Our First Day in Class

Yes it is our first day in class for H and I. We received a text from the teacher this morning confirming that the class we wanna enroll in will start today at 3PM. I had to ask H to call the teacher to confirm and know the details. We were both surprised as we did not expect it to be this soon though we have been waiting for it for quite sometime. We were quite hesitant to attend today coz my sis had a planned activity but she was still waiting for a text to confirm if their activity will push through. So we agreed that if her plan will push through we will rush and be home by 6PM. I also told sis that if ever it won’t then I asked her to text us so we would not rush home since it would around rush hour too and she agreed. Well so off we went to our class near Jacinto St. This class is just for five sessions. Our concern then was we had no cash and we might be late for the class if we still had to pass through SM to withdraw from the ATM. So I had no choice but to use my bill collection which is sort of my savings too. H was quite surprised I had that much. Well women, I mean mothers, are resourceful at times of financial emergency - tested and proven even with my other friends! So we arrived at the address given by teacher E.L. But then the gate to the building he said was locked from outside as evidenced by the big padlock there. Well I had to text teacher EL. While waiting for a reply, I went to a small store nearby and asked. The woman did not know either but when I looked at H he was already talking to whom I suppose was our teacher and indeed he was. We shook hands and went inside. There were four of us in this class. Two were already there. A young man of 21 who lives for the last 10 years and studies in Norway then another man who won’t tell us his age and had been living in Chicago for the past 17 years. Both are Filipinos from Davao and just here for a vacation. Well this would seem to be a fun class. All of us, or at least excluding hubby, are beginners. I would call myself a beginner because I am not that technically knowledgeable with it though I have been doing it since HS.

The first day was okay started at past 3PM and ended around 6PM. We were asked to fill up a registration form and introduce ourselves at the start. Then we started with the basics and mostly theory. But EL was open to questions and the discussion just flowed. Now at least I have an understanding of the words and phrases I have been reading and hearing in the forum - DOF and F. It was a good start and we immediately had an assignment. Well good thing I have H with me and I can always ask for his help. H had been teaching me some basics but then sometimes I just could not easily grasp it until as I would say to see is to believe. Teacher EL also acknowledged that sometimes the concept cannot be fully understood until it is practiced. Anyway, I won’t go to details of the class. But at the end we talked about our schedule and it was okay with us. When we were dismissed, we were happy to have a chat with our two other balikbayan classmates. They were both very friendly and we feel it is going to be a fun class. J, our classmate, already invited us to join his family to snorkling in Samal or just a dinner out. Well we’ll just see if we have time by then but hopefully we can go. I have to see this site of St. John villa rentals where my H said there are beautiful photos underwater.  Our teacher also teaches scuba diving so in the future hoping and wishing that we may get to enroll in his class too.

[...] Photography is something that H and I have been busy with lately. We both have been following the FPS online for about two years ago. H had become a member last year and I just registered a few months ago. But then we do not have a DSLR and we only have a point and shoot Canon Powershot A710IS digital camera. When we got our first DSLR about a week after my birthday this year, I have decided to take photography seriously but slowly as I still have to grasp the things I learn everyday not only in the forum I read on but from a lot of sites online and from the class H and I are taking. There is a lot to learn. But photography makes us happy and its a relaxing hobby but we admit it’s rather expensive too! You may be wondering whose DSLR the one above belongs to. It actually belongs to our new friend and classmate from Norway, Lance. This shot was taken when another classmate of ours, Jess from Chicago treated us to dinner in Harana while waiting for the food. This is a Canon EOS 400D of Lance. Jess has the same DSLR with us, Nikon D60. I thought only in FPS are there jokes on which is better. But Lance sometimes makes a joke about it too. But our teacher E.L. is a Nikon user too! So he does not have much choice for he is only one Canon against three Nikons. But then as we say in FPS “It’s not the Pana (arrow=DSLR/camera used) but it’s in the Indian (photographer)!” and “Owning a DSLR does not instantly make you a photographer, you’re just a DSLR owner/user.“ [...]
