This is an alarming news especially for parents as milk from China has been found to be contaminated with the chemical melamine which is banned on food and so far it has killed four (4) babies while other babies who have drank the contaminated milk had been affected with kidney problem and kidney stones. Now there are said to be 6,244 reported cases of infants who got sick according to China’s Health Minister Chen Zhu on Wednesday. Among these, four babies have died. The fourth baby died at a hospital in remote northwestern Xinjiang, according to a regional Chinese health authority yesterday.
Last Monday, Fonterra, the New Zealand dairy giant said that contaminated milk powder was from its Chinese joint venture company Sanlu Group which they own by 43%. Fonterra also said that they have known of the contamination early August and had wanted an immediate recall of the milk product but Sanlu Group had to abide by Chinese rules. According to the news, Sanlu bought raw milk from third parties “who were putting what appears to be melamine in the milk”. There are now about 19 people detained because of this contamination but they are said to be not the staff of Sanlu.
As this China food scandal widens, Hong Kong has ordered the recall of a Chinese company’s products yesterday after tests found that eight (8) of its thirty (30) products, including milk drinks, were tainted with melamine.
It is really scary for us moms. When I watched the news in TV Patrol this evening, MeadJohnson the manufacturer of milk products including Lactum, the milk which my baby CT drinks now, has announced that they guarantee that their milk products are not contaminated with melamine. So mommies out there be careful and as advised by BFAD, buy only milk from reputable milk manufacturers in the country. The Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) has eased fears that the contaminated baby’s milk from China has reached the Philippines. I sure hope so and I hope none of this would ever happen here.
