UPDATE (01/13/10): Check this post on Philippine Holiday Schedule for 2010 | PGMA’s Proclamation 1841
UPDATE (11/26/09) – “Malacanang has apologized for taking back an earlier announcement declaring November 27 and 28 as special non-working holidays all over the country. Only ARMM will observe the holiday.
Press Secretary Cerge Remonde acknowledged that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s decision to make the two-day celebration of Eid’l Adha later this month as holidays only in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) was prompted by requests from the business community. UPDATE (old): President Arroyo has declared NOVEMBER 27 & 28 as national non-working holidays for Filipino Muslims’ celebration of Eid Al-Adha or Feast of Sacrifice. (source)
There are ten (10) long-weekend holidays for 2009 and this comes as a good news for those who enjoyed the recent long holiday season 2008. Well hopefully you would also enjoy more long weekend holidays this 2009. It has been the President’s advocacy of holiday economics (which means the transfer of some holidays to a Monday or a Friday so that Filipinos may enjoy longer weekends) in order to boost domestic tourism and to allow millions of Filipinos especially those working and employed to have more time to spend with their families either going home to their respective provinces or simply going out with their family.

In making these long holidays for 2009, Malacañang said that consultations have been made with all sectors concerned, including the business community, before issuing this year’s holiday list.
Here is the List of Philippine Holidays for 2009 through PGMA’s Proclamation 1699:
April 6 – Araw ng Kagitingan (moved to the nearest Monday) – regular holiday
April 9 – Maundy Thursday - regular holiday
April 10 – Good Friday – regular holiday
May 1 – Labor Day – regular holiday
June 12 – Independence Day – regular holiday
August 21 – Ninoy Aquino Day – special non-working day
August 31 – National Heroes Day – regular Holiday
November 1 – All Saints Day – special non-working day
November 2 – All Souls Day – special non-working day
November 30 - Bonifacio Day – regular holiday
December 24 – Christmas Eve – special non-working day
December 25 - Christmas Day – regular holiday
December 30 – Rizal Day – regular holiday
December 31 – New Year’s Eve - special non-working day
Given this holiday schedule, this gives way to list of ten (10) long-weekend holiday dates for 2009 for those with no work during weekends:
- April 4 – 6 (Araw ng Kagitingan on April 9 moved to the nearest Monday, April 6)
- April 9 – 12 (Holy Week or Easter holidays)
- May 1 – 3 (Labor Day)
- June 12 – 14 (Independence Day)
- August 21 – 23 (Ninoy Aquino Day)
- August 29 – 31 (National Heroes Day)
- October 31 – November 2 (All Saints Day/All Souls Day)
- November 28 – 30 (Bonifacio Day)
- December 24 – 27 (Christmas holidays)
- December 30 – January 3, 2010 (Rizal Day & New Year)
So I suggest for those planning to allocate their vacation leaves, you may reserve two days vacation leave on December 28 and 29 (Monday & Tuesday) so that you will have a longer Christmas holiday in 2009 and this will start on December 24, Christmas Eve until January 3, 2010 (Sunday). This will be a 12-day holiday vacation! So plan your leaves and vacation well this 2009 and make the most out it.
