Kung Hei Fat Choi | Chinese New Year 2009

Kung Hei Fat Choi!!! Today, January 26, 2009 (on a new moon) is the Chinese New Year 2009 or which is also called the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival. 2009 is the Year of the Ox. Orange is a lucky color for those who wanna celebrate the Chinese new year which is celebrated on the first day (during the new moon) of the first lunar month of the Chinese calendar. The Chinese New Year is considered a major traditional holiday for the Chinese.

Some beliefs/traditions:

  • Lighting fires and using knives to be bad luck on New Year’s Day as some would consider so all food to be eaten are cooked the day before.
  • Most importantly for Chinese, the first day of Chinese New Year is a time when families visit the oldest and most senior members of their extended family, usually their parents, grandparents or great-grandparents.
  • On the days before the New Year celebration, Chinese families have a thorough home cleaning. There is a Cantonese saying “Wash away the dirt” for they say cleaning sweeps away the bad luck from last year and makes their homes ready for good luck. Brooms and dust pans are put away on the first day so that luck cannot be swept away as they say.
  • Well there is the traditional coin shower to bring good luck and prosperity and roll oranges on the floor.
  • I also heard to place water that is “moving” in the south east part of the house which is the lucky part of the house for bringing in money and prosperity. You can simply place a basin with water and fish to make the water moving.

As for us here, we just had a coin shower at midnight and had a little snack with hubby.
