Serena Williams won Saturday the 2009 Australian Open with the score 6-0, 6-3 defeating Dinara Safina on Saturday which earned her 10th Grand Slam title and fourth Australian Open women’s singles title (coming each odd-numbered year since 2003). Serena Williams also got back the the No. 1-ranking in women’s tennis which made this victory more meaningful for her. In the crowd watching her victory is her elder sister Venus Williams and mother Oracene Price.

I saw their match at ESPN this morning and indeed second-seeded Serena dominated the match from the start.  Unlike Serena’s previous matches earlier this week, she started and did well in this entire women’s singles finals match. Dinara, third seed, seems shocked at the end of the match as she was also fighting for the number 1 rank in women’s tennis.

Serena defeated Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva in the semi-finals. Last Friday, Serena and sister Venus Williams won their third Australian Open women’s doubles title defeating Daniela Hantuchova and Ai Sugiyama in straight sets. It is the Williams sisters eighth Grand Slam doubles title.
