Finally! Meet Bo the First Dog of First daughters Malia and Sasha and the First family of US President Obama. I have heard about the girls getting a dog in the President Obama’s speech when he won the presidency and even before during the campaign.
US President Barack Obama presented Bo, the first family’s new Portuguese Water Dog puppy in the South Lawn with his family – wife Michelle, daughter Malia (10) and Sasha (8) at the White House in Washington, D.C. yesterday April 14, 2009.
Bo is a 6-month old Portugese water dog a gift from Senator Edward M. Kennedy who himself owns a few dogs of the same breed. Obama’s daughters chose the name Bo coz first lady Michelle Obama’s father was nicknamed Diddley. The name of the dog was an apparent reference to the singer “Bo” Diddley (I don’t know him, I’ll Google it later). They chose this dog because it is hypoallergenic since daughter Malia has allergies.
“The only concern we have is that apparently, Portuguese water dogs like tomatoes. Michelle’s garden is in danger,” the President said. “We don’t have tomatoes,” the first lady said. “Not yet,” Obama reminded.
“He doesn’t know how to swim,” chimed in 7-year-old Sasha.
“Apparently they have to be taught how to swim,” the president said. “They have webbed feet. And they herd fish for the fishermen in Portugal. That is what we’ve heard.” (CNN)
