Malacañang yesterday declared May 3, 2010 as a non-working holiday to commemorate Labor Day which falls on Saturday – May 1. This is good news for workers and employees wanting to have a long weekend this week to spend with their families and loved ones. Malacañang issued Proclamation No. 2043 Wednesday, issued by Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza which cited Republic Act 9849 that indicated holidays including Labor Day will be observed on the nearest Monday and that is May 3.

This is in line with the government’s thrust of encouraging holiday economics, which provides employees a long weekend, encouraging them to go out of town and hopefully spur the country’s tourism industry. Under Proclamation No. 1841, which covers holidays for this year, a non-working day is usually moved to the nearest Monday, giving the public a longer weekend. (source)
