Today’s young kids are practically born with an electronic device in their hands. They grow up with video game systems, television shows on demand, music players and even electronic readers that deliver books and magazines on a whim. They become addicted to online casino games, online chatting with friends and electronic forms of communication that require zero physical activity. How then, are parents supposed to excite their children about playing sports and getting involved with non-digitally fueled activities? It can be challenging, but getting your kids off the couch and onto the soccer field, dance floor or basketball court is vital to their health and well being – both physically and mentally – for the rest of their lives.

The first thing to do is pinpoint your child’s particular interests. Does he love playing fantasy baseball online? Sign him up for little league or township t-ball. Is your daughter addicting to chatting on her cell phone with friends? The school cheerleading squad is a great way for her to flex her social – and physical muscles. If you entertain interests your children already have, they will be much more likely to take to their given physical activity than if you play against existing hobbies and social lives, which largely exist online.

Getting your children involved in team sports and active at a young age is imperative for their lifelong physical health. In fact, setting the stage early for an interest in exercise is actually one of the most influential factors in developing a healthy self image and sense of strength and self worth for kids.

Helping your kids thrive in physical activities can be difficult to start – but once they are involved they will begin to look forward to sports practice. They may even begin venturing outside on their own without a scheduled practice, you know, without the video game controller attached to their hands.
