My Dream of a Philippine Vacation

With October drawing to a close and the winter season just around the corner, I can’t help but think about taking a relaxing, warm, tropical vacation in the Philippines. I also want my vacation to feel different, more detached from reality and the rest of the world, and grounded in a laid-back place I’ve never traveled to before. Of course, I’ve been to many places in the Philippines, but the country has over seven thousand islands. I don’t want to go to an island like Luzon, chocked with people and beaten by tourists. Instead, for the first time, I was to go somewhere more desolate, more remote.

After all, I feel that it’s easiest to relax when you are furthest away from the rest of society. If I’m sitting on a beach in the middle of the Pacific, I’ve got to be more relaxed than in a hotel in Manila, even a luxury one. With this in mind, my dream Philippine vacation takes places on a tiny island tucked away in the Philippine Sea. Getting there will be a bit of a hassle – I’ll probably have to take a turboprop plane – but once there I’ll have all the benefits of the Philippines, and of paradise, without any of the drawbacks.

I won’t take any technology with me, except maybe a Prepaid Phone, just in case. I won’t pack a huge suitcase or expect to stay in a fancy hotel. Instead, I’ll travel simply, I won’t make any plans, and I’ll have no vacation goals other than to sit on the beach, soak in the sun – and relax.

Even though I’ve never spent time on one of these small, out of the way islands of my dreams, I imagine that they have geography just as stunning as the rest of the Philippines. I picture dense, tropical rainforests, soaring volcanic peaks, a beautiful coastline, and an incredible diversity of plants and animals. But unlike the rest of the Philippines, though, my island will be free of strip malls, bus stations, and even paved roads.

I don’t know if this trip is a fantasy or a reality. I am sure that my dream island vacation is out there somewhere, but until I find the time and money to go there, it will remain just that – a dream.
